Complaining

Want a New Job? Stop Copmplaining.

If you are struggling to get work right now, I get it. I am blessed to be fully employed and able to pay my bills. I cannot even imagine the panic I would have to not be able to provide for my family.

But one piece of advice: When posting on LinkedIn, or other social media channels, stop the blame game towards:

  • The CEO's who get tax breaks - they are the ones hiring people like you and me.

  • The wealthy business owners who don't seem to understand your plight OR don't have a need for your skillset right now - they may have a need tomorrow.

  • The HR person who skips over your resume because it is like the other hundred or so they have gone through.

  • The recruiter who didn't call you back today is grinding and despite not calling you had one hundred other calls to make that were more urgent.

Nobody is responsible for your situation. Not your former boss, not your former company. You get yourself nowhere by complaining or blaming people privately- and certainly not by letting your complaints be aired on this or any other social media channel. Remember- nothing disappears on Social Media. That company or CEO you have blacklisted online may be the next one hiring. My mother always said "if you cannot say something nice...don't say anything at all." That is sage advice.

Here are a few other ideas:

  1. Take responsibility for your own situation. Use the energy that you are using blaming everyone else for your situation and put it to something positive.

  2. Do what you need to do to get a job, even if it a service job while you hunt for the ideal job.

  3. Take a hard look in the mirror- what skillset do I need to add? What additional education do I need?

  4. Get feedback from every rejection and work on what was said to improve your chances.

  5. Don't just send a resume- get information on the company and get to the person hiring and reach out to them directly until you hear a no.

  6. Seek out a recruiter in your industry to help you. Hire a resume writer. Hire a coach. Hard to do when there is no money coming in I know- so find someone in your network that will help you on contingency- or even for free.

  7. Talking about networking Use social media not to complain, but to network. Leverage your network. Make contacts in the industry. Ask for help in the network.

But please, stop complaining. Stop the blame game. It does not help your cause, and it makes you as a candidate unattractive to someone who would potentially hire you - even if you never do the complaining publicly it sticks to your soul and comes across in conversation and personal interaction. It makes you seem bitter, and it blinds you off to potential opportunities because of that blindness.

I know- it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel when you are in the middle of it.  Take the blinders of bitterness and anger off, and try an attitude of gratitude. When the opportunity comes, you will be ready for it.
